Approximation Algorithms for the Maximum Cut Problem

چکیده

Consider the problem of keeping closely related objects together and seperating unrelated objects from each other. This idea has clear applications to statistics, computer science, mathematics, social studies, and natural sciences just to name a few. To model this idea, we de ne the maximum cut problem that is simple to state but di cult to solve. The aim of this report is to provide two known c-approximation algorithm to approximate the maximum cut value on a graph whose edges are unweighted.

CS261: A Second Course in Algorithms Lecture #20: The Maximum Cut Problem and Semidefinite Programming∗

Now that you’re finishing CS261, you’re well equipped to comprehend a lot of advanced material on algorithms. This lecture illustrates this point by teaching you about a cool and famous approximation algorithm. In the maximum cut problem, the input is an undirected graph G = (V,E) with a nonnegative weight we ≥ 0 for each edge e ∈ E. The goal is to compute a cut — a partition of the vertex set ...

2.1 Simple Approximation Algorithm

In this note, the cut C is referred as the cut-set and the size of the cut |C| as the size of the cut-set. For a graph, a maximum cut is a cut whose size is at least the size of any other cut. The problem of finding a maximum cut in a graph is known as the maximum cut problem. The problem is NP-hard. Simple 0.5approximation algorithms existed long time ago, but no improvement was made till 1990...

Approximation Algorithms for Maximum Coverage and Max Cut with Given Sizes of Parts

In this paper we demonstrate a general method of designing constant-factor approximation algorithms for some discrete optimization problems with cardinality constraints. The core of the method is a simple deterministic (\pipage") procedure of rounding of linear relaxations. By using the method we design a (1 ? (1 ? 1=k) k)-approximation algorithm for the maximum coverage problem where k is the ...

Approximation for Steiner Network

We present the first polynornial-time approximation algorithm for finding a minimum-cost subgraph having at least a specified number of edges in each cut. This class of problems includes, among others, the generalized Steiner network problem, also called the survivable network design problem. If k is the maximum cut requirement of the problem, our solution comes within a factor of 2k of optimal...

Approximation Algorithms for Connected Maximum Cut and Related Problems

An instance of the Connected Maximum Cut problem consists of an undirected graph G = (V,E) and the goal is to find a subset of vertices S ⊆ V that maximizes the number of edges in the cut δ(S) such that the induced graph G[S] is connected. We present the first non-trivial Ω( 1 logn ) approximation algorithm for the Connected Maximum Cut problem in general graphs using novel techniques. We then ...

Fast Approximation Algorithms for Fractional Steiner Forest and Related Problems

We give a fully polynomial time approximation scheme (FPTAS) for the optimum fractional solution to the Steiner forest problem. This can easily be generalized to obtain an FPTAS for a hitting set problem on a collection of clutters. We also identify three other problems on collections of clutters and show how these four problems are related when the clutters have the max-flow min-cut (MFMC) pro...
